Cryolipolysis is an innovative process for permanently decreasing the number of fat cells by means of short local cooling: especially in those areas where fat pads simply won’t go away, not even by exercise or sports, targeted training and a healthy diet. Unfortunately, there are more than enough pads like that – typical places are the tummy, the hips, the buttocks, or the infamous “saddlebags”.
The special thing about cryolipolysis is that it is a minimally invasive treatment method – so cryolipolysis is no operation and no liposuction in the usual way. Instead, the body itself looks after getting rid of those bothersome fat cells.
That also explains the somewhat cumbersome name of “cryolipolysis”: it is derived from the Greek words for “frost, ice” (kryos), “fat” (lipa), and “dissolution” (lysis). In other words: fat cells get as it were dissolved when subjected to cold.
The big advantage of cryolipolysis is that body cells react differently to low temperatures. While skin cells and connective tissue cells are not disturbed by the intense cooling, fat cells “crystallise” by lasting cooling and will finally die off. Thus, the body’s lymphatic system can transport those fat cells away from the treated areas in the weeks to come and dissolve them.
Of course, every person is different; but one can say that up to one third of the fat cells in the treated area can be made to disappear after only one treatment.

FAQ on Cryolipolysis
Who may benefit from cryolipolysis?
If you discover fat pads on your body that bother you and which simply won’t go away even though you do sports and keep a healthy diet, then you should consider cryolipolysis. All the more if you don’t want to have a liposuction done on you, have a general resistance towards operations, or if an operation is to be avoided for medical reasons. For cryolipolysis is no surgical operation and no injection, but a particularly gentle method.
There are, however, various illnesses which won’t allow this treatment. We will discuss this with you for your individual case during a comprehensive personal consultation. Whenever you have questions or concerns in this regard, please feel free to contact us at any time.
Cryolipolysis is particularly suitable for these body zones:
- Upper arms – 400 € each
- Tummy – 700–800 €
- Hips – 600 € each
- Inner thighs – 550 € each
- Outer thighs – 600–700 € each
How do we conduct a cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis is done with a special device which has applicators with attachments in different sizes. An applicator of the right size is placed on that part of the body to be treated; a cloth protects the surrounding skin. Then, a light vacuum is created so that the skin is slightly sucked towards the applicator. At this point, the temperature is now lowered to +4°C.
First, there will be a feeling like a slight pressure, but this feeling will quickly lessen. The low temperature is not felt to be unpleasant. During the treatment, which will last about one hour, you may read a book or watch a movie – after all, you are neither sedated nor is your attention drawn elsewhere.
After about half the treatment time, there will be a short local massage by means of a slight vibration by the applicator. At the end of the treatment, there will also be a massage or a light additional treatment by means of acoustic waves from an AWT device (AWT = Acoustic Wave Therapy). This will speed up the degeneration of the crystallised cells.
Since the fat cells get transported away by the lymphatic system, the effect is not immediately visible – experience shows that you will perceive the complete treatment result after 8–16 weeks. And this result will look harmonious: thanks to the even treatment area, there will generally speaking not be any unevenness.
What is important following a cryolipolysis?
Since the treatment is so gentle, you can continue your normal daily routines right after the treatment. A slight stiff feeling in the treated tissue will usually disappear after only a few minutes. A temporary reddening of the skin is normal. Due to the vacuum, there may be a bruise; in rare cases, the treated body area may be sensitive to the touch or inversely be less sensitive – but this will as a rule disappear on its own after only a short while.
In any case, we recommend one aftercare appointment each, one week and seven weeks after the treatment, respectively. Then the result can be evaluated, and we will discuss with you how you will have experienced the treatment and the time elapsed since then. Should you want additional cryolipolysis treatments, we will discuss with you if, when, or how many additional treatments you wish for and to what extent additional treatment sessions may make sense for you.
A general rule: We will inform you comprehensively in a detailed personal consultation about any potential risks as well as about how we will proceed with our treatment in your individual case. Please feel free to contact us about this.
What is important after a cryolipolysis?
After the cryolipolysis, you should refrain from doing any heavy physical exercise or sports for 2–3 days. You should not go to the sauna, do sunbathing, or drink alcohol for a while after the treatment. In order to support the healing process after the treatment, we recommend that you pay attention to a healthy diet rich in vitamins and drink lots of water. This will promote the transport and removal of the fat cells from your body.
Potential side effects of a cryolipolysis comprise e.g. a short tingling, burning, or numbness in the treated area, but those will generally disappear on their own after only a few hours. In rare case, there may be an itch which can be treated by applying a soothing cream. But generally speaking, you will be presentable right away after a cryolipolysis.
Which side effects are to be expected with a cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis usually has no pronounced side effects so that this treatment is a go-to option for eliminating smaller fat pads. However, following the treatment, there may be a reddening of the skin or swelling which will as a rule disappear on their own after some time. If you have a propensity for swelling or haematomas, then please mention this during your personal consultation with the medical specialist who will treat you. We will continue to accompany our patients in the time after the treatment by way of aftercare appointments. So should any sensibility disorders occur after the cryolipolysis, this can be discussed with the patient at short notice.
